Born in Zanzibar and raised in England, Freddie Mercury very much belonged to the entire world.

But if there was one place you could describe as the Queen frontman's spiritual home, perhaps it was Wembley Park.

Queen played Wembley Arena a whopping 10 times across three tours from 1978 to 1984.

And it was the nearby Wembley Stadium that hosted Queen's set at Live Aid in 1985, often hailed as the greatest gig of all time.

The band returned the following year for two sold out headline shows on The Magic Tour, and more sadly it was Wembley Stadium that hosted The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992.

For many years, Freddie was celebrated in tiles on Olympic Way, but in 2006 the area had been rebuilt, meaning the loss of the mosaic.

But now Mercury's image is returning to the area in a much more ambitious style.

To celebrate what would have been Freddie's 80th birthday this Saturday (September 5), British street artist Frank Styles has created a 30ft anamorphic mural called I'm Mr Mercury.

Situated perfectly on Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps that link Wembley Arena and Wembley Stadium, the mural has been hand-sprayed and applied to vinyl.

It features a monochromatic image of Mercury against a backdrop of colour and graphic elements inspired by his life, passions and artistic identity.

Elements featured in the artwork include a koi carp in reference to both Freddie's love of Japan and the Japanese garden and pond in his Kensington home, as well as a winged female from the Queen crest to echo Mercury's Virgo star sign.

The mural also features snippets of Mercury's lyrics and several of his quotations to tell the story of his life.

"Freddie was known to millions around the world as the frontman of Queen but off stage, he was a quiet and humble man, happy at home surrounded by the things he loved most," said the band's longtime manager Jim Beach.

"I'm Mr. Mercury perfectly captures the beautiful complexity of Freddie, with his captivating portrait drawing people into his world as he did so magically during his life."

Styles added: "It's been an honour to once again work with Wembley Park to deliver this tribute to the one and only, Freddie Mercury.

"As a trained graphic designer himself, Freddie was very aware and precise about the visual feel and so I have endeavoured to follow his ethos in the conscious creation of this mural."

Wembley Park’s Head of Cultural Programming Claudio Giambrone said: "Freddie Mercury's relationship with Wembley goes far beyond a single famous performance.

"Some of Queen's most extraordinary moments happened here and generations of fans continue to associate Freddie with Wembley.

"For his 80th birthday, we wanted to create something that gives fans a new place in Wembley where they can come together and remember him."
