Robert Redford was one of the icons of 20th century cinema.
Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.
The acting and directing legend passed away in his sleep at his home in Provo, Utah earlier today (September 16).
"Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah - the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved" said his publicist Cindi Berger.
"He will be missed greatly."
Born Charles Robert Redford Jr in Santa Monica, California, Redford had a stunning career as an actor, making his name with roles like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and All The President's Men.
He became an accomplished director, winning an Oscar for his 1980 debut Ordinary People.
Redford also co-founded the Sundance Resort and Film Institute and created the Sundance Film Festival.
Across his career, Redford racked up several major awards for his work in front of and behind the camera, as well as for his wider contributions to cinema and political activism.
That included an Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globes as well as the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors and Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Redford's last acting role in a major movie was a cameo as Alexander Pierce in blockbuster Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
He was an executive producer of TV show Dark Winds and made an uncredited cameo in the third season premiere in March of this year, his last screen role before his death.
Redford is survived by his second wife Sibylle Szaggars, who he married in 2009.
He had four children with his first wife Lola Van Wagenen, two of whom have passed away. He and Van Wagenen married in 1958 and were reported to have divorced in the mid-1980s.
